Winter spells fun in the Upper Arkansas Valley. If downhill skiing or snowboarding is your bag, then Monarch Ski Resort is the place for you where the snow is deep and powdery. Ski Cooper is just south of Leadville and provides ample trails. Moreover, Salida's central location puts it within an hour or two of most of the major Colorado Ski resorts. If cross country is your style, the county has a myriad of awesome backcountry trails and if that is not enough, try the Nordic Ski Center at Fairplay, only 40 miles east.

If you prefer motorized winter recreation, you may want to try snowmobiling the many snowmobile runs in backcountry Chaffee County.
