AMERICAN BRASS QUINTET TO OPEN 2008 SALIDA ASPEN CONCERT SERIES

Contact: Earle Kittleman, 719-539-6153 - kittleman@amigo.net
Salida's adopted sons—The American Brass Quintet—will open the 32nd annual Salida Aspen Concert series of six concerts beginning Saturday, June 28 and ending August 9. The ABQ, one of the world's great brass ensembles, has performed every year in Salida since 1977.
Salida Aspen Concerts is made possible by a longstanding partnership with Aspen Music Festival and School, which selects the artists and brings them over Independence Pass to Salida for each week's performance at John Held Auditorium at Salida High School and one performance in Buena Vista.
"Once again, we have a great lineup of star-quality musicians and some wonderful student ensembles who will make a side trip to Salida during their busy summer in Aspen to play for our patrons," said David Clark, president of Salida Concerts Inc. "Donors and sponsors too many to list have sustained this concert series for three decades in Chaffee County and they deserve all the credit for its success," Clark said.
The original design for the program book has been in use since the organization was founded. The red heart and gold aspen leaf symbolize the Salida-Aspen partnership, which brings classical music to the heart of Rocky Mountains.
Tickets cost $15.00 at the door or can be purchased online at the website SalidaAspenConcerts.org. Concert time is 7:30 p.m.
The series schedule follows:
Sat., June 28—The American Brass Quintet, recognized around the world as one of the world's premier brass ensembles, will be joined by a student brass ensemble from Aspen. Baroque, Renaissance and Elizabethan music is their specialty, but the ABQ also plays historically researched band music from the American Civil War and new works commissioned by ABQ. A database of brass music composed since 1950 can be found on their website www.AmericanBrassQuintet.org. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Held Auditorium, Salida High School, 10th and D Streets, Salida CO.
Mon.
, July 7— David Halen (violin), Darrett Adkins (cello) and Ann Schein (piano) will perform Maurice Ravel's piano trio and other chamber music. Halen (www2.mercer.edu/Music/davidhalen.htm) is concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, serves on the faculty at the Aspen Music Festival and is visiting artist at Yale University and artistic director of the Innsbrook Institute. Cellist Darrett Adkins (http://www.darrettadkins.com/) has been called "stunning" "heroic" and "fiery" for his interpretations in almost every musical genre from the classics to the avant-garde. Schein (www.music.sc.edu/EventsWorkshops/sepf/schein.html) has played in more than 50 countries worldwide since 1980 when she triumphed at Carnegie Hall. She has been an artist-faculty member of the Aspen Festival and School since 1984. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Held Auditorium, Salida High School, 10th and D Streets, Salida CO.
Sat., July 12—Joyce Yang will perform as soloist and will play chamber music with friends from Aspen Music Festival. Since winning the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at the age of 19 years old, Joyce Yang has been on a world tour of the great concert halls. Last year she played with the symphonies of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Houston, Fort Worth, Indianapolis and Orlando and held recitals throughout North America and Europe. Last year in Salida she enchanted the audience at the opening of the Salida Aspen Concert season. A native of the Republic of Korea, Joyce Yang's music can be heard at myspace.com/joyceyang and on a growing list of recordings. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Held Auditorium, Salida High School, 10th and D Streets, Salida CO.
Sat., July 19—The Sybarite Chamber Players (string quintet) got their start in 1997 playing on a street corner in Aspen during the Aspen Music Festival and now are devoted to educating and expanding the repertoire for string quintet. They performed in Salida during the 2002 Salida Aspen Concerts series. Currently they are commissioning, performing and recording classical works inspired and influenced by Radiohead (www.sybarite5.org). This group of young artists is considered one of the most versatile ensembles of its kind and a driving force paralleled by few. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Fellowship Church, 608 South San Juan Street, in Buena Vista, Colorado.
Sat., July 26—Aspen Contemporary Ensemble and Syd Hodkinson play flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion and various other instruments. They will perform a program of mixed eras–not just contemporary–directed by composer-conductor Syd Hodkinson, a jazz musician who also studied classical music at the Eastman School of Music. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Held Auditorium, Salida High School, 10th and D Streets, Salida CO.

He won 1st prize in the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Vienna in 1973 and made a special study of Beethoven with the legendary German pianist Wilhelm Kempff.
